Stylistics

I’ve always been someone who takes great interest in visuals and how something can visually trigger an emotion or a memory.  The aesthetic and feel for ‘Femme’ is important to making the audience feel like they can connect with the participants telling their stories. I have taken inspiration from a variety of movements for this project. The videos I’d like to have the same feel as StyleLikeU’s “What’s underneath” project. A loft or apartment vibe with minimal decorations, perhaps a studio setting. This is due to me wanting all the attention on the participant and feeling fully engulfed in what they have to say – to reach their raw emotions. I have also taken some inspiration from websites such as Sex Pistols and Guerrilla Girls who have gone for an ‘anarchy’, ‘rebellion’ feel. This would suit well for my website and I like the juxtaposition of the minimalistic video style against the chaos on the website to express the struggle with trying to fit in and be “perfect” on social media amongst a society that is, ultimately, a mess.

"The media is the message and the messenger" - Pat Mitchell, CEO, Producer and Curator for Global Media Change and the representation of women's voices and stories

Whilst browsing Netflix one day I came across a documentary called "Miss Representation" (2011) exploring how the mainstream media's often disparaging portrayals of women contribute to the under-representation of females in positions of leadership. I loved the simplicity and style of how each interviewee was just against a white backdrop to really hone in on what they we're stressing.

Although the style of  Jennifer Siebel Newsom is slightly too clinical the clean cut and raw visuals is something I’m intending to bring to my interviews.
